If your loved one has passed away while traveling or living away from home, please don't hesitate to call us at 503-325-1811. Our team is here to help you navigate the process and determine the best course of action for your family.

Death Within the United States

When a loved one passes away in another state or city, families have the option to have their loved one brought back home. This process typically involves two funeral homes working together. The funeral home local to where the death occurred will take your loved one into their care and prepare the remains for transport. Caldwell's will then receive your loved one upon arrival and handle all services here at home, just as we would in any other circumstance.

We are experienced in coordinating this process and will work closely with the out-of-area funeral home to ensure everything is handled with care, dignity, and as little stress on your family as possible.

Death Outside the United States

When a loved one passes away in a foreign country, returning them home is still possible, though the process involves additional steps. Preparation and transportation of the remains must follow the laws and customs of the country where the death occurred, which can vary significantly from what families may be familiar with here in the United States. While embalming is not commonly practiced in many parts of the world, other methods of preparation for international transport are available.

Families also have the option to have their loved one laid to rest in the country where the death occurred, or to have the remains cremated and returned to the United States — either carried by a family member or shipped via air or mail services.

Whatever the situation, our team is here to help you understand your options and coordinate the details on your behalf. You don't have to figure this out alone — call us anytime at 503-325-1811.
